install SMART package manager on openSUSE 10.3

Uncategorized December 6th, 2007

Are you - like me - feeling uncomfortable with the new dumb interface of the YaST module devoted to the package management ?

yast-03

Well, relax … you still can install the Smart Package Manager quick and easy ! Just open a shell with administrative rights and do:

zypper sa -r http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/smart/openSUSE_10.3/smart.repo
zypper ref smart
zypper install smart

Then you have to add some repository to it, and for this we will use the Pascal’s pre-made file linked inside the example (you can create a personal config file following that syntax, if you want/need):

smart channel --add http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/files/smart/opensuse-10.3.txt
smart mirror –add http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/files/smart/mirrors-eu.txt
smart update

Remember …. the guru’s repository is slowly merging into Packman!

References: the SMART project’s homepage, and obviously the Pascal’s post which I’ve copied :-D

CentOS 5.1 and some other news

Uncategorized December 6th, 2007

centos logo Recently I’m studying some manuals to help the strategy decision of updating our 15 HP machines cluster to a more recent version of the operating system, splitting it in 2 functional branches.

One for GRID like calculation and one for a proprer application cluster.

Since the systems now runs something between Red Hat AS Linux 3.* with many addictional packages from the Scientific Linux repositories I had the chance to express my desire to have a SL driven GRID machine and then an eleven nodes CentOS cluster.

So I saw some interesting news on their front:

  • the growth of the CentOS wiki contents and activities;
  • a newborn Planet CentOS aggregator of the blogs present in the CentOS community;
  • the spreading of the new 5.1 release, just after the Prominent North American Vendor! Here the release notes.

PSI how-to, connect to GTalk

Uncategorized December 6th, 2007

This weekend I’ve installed Mac OS X 10.3.9 on the Apple Powermac “Quicksilver” I’ve found abandoned in a magazine at work, since newest releases of the Apple operating systems (but most probably Spotlight) isn’t too kind over an ATA66 hard disk connection.

A bunch of software isn’t kept up to date with the mainstream release with this platform, so for example I couldn’t use the latest Adium for instant messaging. Fire is also a dismissed software so I choose to use my long time favourite PSI instant messaging client to manage this task.

But there was a little problem, both the official PSI faq and the official GTalk faq gave me wrong information to correctly connect to the GTalk server.

working PSI setting

As you can see in the (clickable) image above, I had to use the “default” 5222 port to connect to the talk.google.com server instead of the 5223 port mentioned in both faqs.

Hope this helps somebody!

what architectures in your Mac OS ?

Uncategorized December 6th, 2007

I was reading my Nezmar pal’s blog when I found a post in which he showed a funny trik to visualize the hardware architectures present in your current installation of Mac OS X.

This is obtainable by giving the following command or your terminal.app:

find / -perm -1 -type f -exec file \{\} \; | grep Mach-O | grep 'for architecture' | awk '{ print substr($0, match($0, "for architecture [^\\)]*”), RLENGTH)}’ | cut -d’ ‘ -f3 | sort | uniq -c

And this is what I get from it after some CPU clicles and hard drives read:

3234 i386
463 ppc
635 ppc64
2346 ppc7400
1 ppc750
1129 x86_64

where i386 means Intel specific code, ppc for the generic PowerPC family, ppc7400 for G4, ppc750 for G3, ppc970 for G5.

Enjoy !

You Are Barney

You could have been an intellectual leader…

Instead, your whole life is an homage to beer

You will be remembered for: your beautiful singing voice and your burps

Your life philosophy: “There’s nothing like beer to give you that inflated sense of self-esteem.”

what kind of blogger am I ?

Uncategorized December 6th, 2007

What Kind of Blogger Are You?

Greed: -4
You’re not in this for the money, for you blogging is all about the passion! Sure you might make a little pocket change now and again, but you know that it’s the content, the audience and the people that are what makes blogging great!

Experience: 2
You’ve been blogging since Nick Denton was in diapers. When it comes to blogging experience, you are the authority on blogging. Heck you probably even have a blog where you give advice about blogging!

Sociability: 0
Social media, other bloggers, networks and all that jazz don’t really interest you. You have enough friends in the real world, you don’t need more. You blog because you want to express yourself not to meet bloggers!

0xED, a native OS X hex editor

Uncategorized December 6th, 2007

0xed - an hexadecimal editor for OS X Last week I was in need of an hexadecimal editor for my OS X system and so I did a quick research on the web.

I found 0xED right in the Apple Downloads’ pages, under the Development Tools section (link).

The interface is clear and I’ve managed to accomplish the task I needed to in few minutes efficently and I can’t help but suggest it for your use.

So happy download !
